Phone battery advice is full of folklore inherited from older cell chemistries. Lithium-ion behaves differently, and most of the rules people repeat are either outdated or irrelevant.
A lithium-ion cell loses usable capacity as its internal chemistry changes over time. The practical result is that the same physical battery holds less charge than it did when new, and its internal resistance rises, which can cause unexpected shutdowns under load even when the indicator shows charge remaining.
Elevated temperature accelerates the chemical processes that age a cell. This is why leaving a phone on a car dashboard in direct sun, or gaming at full brightness while fast charging, is more damaging than any charging habit.
Fast charging generates heat, which is the real mechanism behind concerns about it. A phone with good thermal management and sensible charging firmware handles this far better than the raw wattage figure suggests.
Cells age faster when held at a high state of charge for long periods. A phone that sits on a charger overnight every night spends many hours at full charge. This is precisely the problem that optimised or adaptive charging features address, by holding at a lower level and completing the charge shortly before you wake.
If your phone offers a charge limit around eighty percent, it is one of the few settings with a genuine long-term effect.
Regularly running to zero is harder on a cell than partial discharges. There is no benefit to fully draining a modern phone, and the old advice about full cycles belongs to a different chemistry.
Using a different manufacturer’s charger is fine provided it is a reputable unit that negotiates properly. Closing background apps to save the battery achieves very little on modern mobile operating systems, which already suspend inactive processes aggressively.
Both major mobile platforms expose a battery health figure. When capacity falls far enough that the phone cannot get through your normal day, a battery replacement is almost always cheaper than a new device and restores most of the original experience.
